DescriptionThe United Alpine was the mainstay of the Lyell township during the 1880s, one of the best top quartz gold producers of the region, and was worked until 1912, it was also the earliest established quartz mining complex in Inangahua.

Joe Kelly There were several hard rock mine there.All that's left of the Alpine is a large pelton wheel and the crusher cam.There is another restored battery closer to the road.

Cyanide tanks were there also. Several mines and tunnels supplied Quartz for the crushing stampers. The last resident attracted some Americans to open up a tunnel seeking 3 Oz of gold to 1 tonne of mined ore. They found some but several seams were badly fractured from earthquakes. In the end the last attempt was unsuccessful. About mid 1960ties . Other stories of rich seams were told. From the Lyell you could see a seam of rich Quartz. Earthquakes an bush covered it. We looked for it after the Inangahua earth quake. Never seen it.??????

Been up to zalatown. During the 90s The track was in excellent condition. Shows the quality of the build all those years ago. The remains of the trees removed . There stumps are huge
