The abandoned underground Moody Creek coal mine is approximately two kilometres east of Dunollie, bordering the Rewanui cycle-way (former Rewanui railway), on the southern side of Seven Mile Creek.

Mining started in 1906 with the erection of a screening plant, haulage road, and boring to the Moody Creek coal seam. However little information was found of activity for most of the 20th Century.

Mine manager Thomas Hoyes was charged with safety breaches in 1931, being the accumulation of coal dust which was an explosion/fire risk, and the non recording of detonator use. Hoyes failed to appear in court, and was fined 2 pounds 10 shillings.

The mine was owned and operated in 1945 by the Moody Creek Co-Operative Coal Mining Party. In this year their mine manager James William Patterson (57) was killed in a fall of coal.

The mine was purchased by Todd Energy in 1986, producing 70 000 tonnes annually until closed in 1999, when economic coal reserves ran out. The mine was then sold to Solid Energy in 2001, but remained closed.Map^[1]ContributorJade Wright

Jade Wright its one of my grandads coal mines, my grandad is the man in the photo at the far back (Jim Wright). I think up spring creek not sure

Maye Dunn Lynne it was Keith Henderson, may have been late 1950's. He had the Railway Hotel in the early 60's.

We used to load their coal wagons on the way down the incline, it was not easy as the wagons had to be stopped in the precise position in order for them to be fully loaded. If you over ran the correct point it was very difficult to move the wagon back up the hill.
