Sophie Allan Piner's old house, now moved further North now, pig shed is still there and old bulldozer/digger tracks rusting on the beach from when it was mined. Little white house still there and lived in on Maori lease land.

John White Does anyone remember a guy who lived at 12 mile & made imitation orchids? I remember buying one from him & I was told Elvis Presley’s wife has them in her wedding bouquet - but not sure if that was fact or BS?

Jim Forsman You are correct John, He used to spend around 6 months of the year here and 6 months in Fiji. Thanks Heather Newby for supplying his name. They were'nt all imitation as he also grew them inside large glass aquariums where he could control all the elements. When our band played in Westport on a Friday night we would always call in to see Peter and have a seafood lunch.
Lynne Brown Yes his name was Peter Hewison I think, I went to his house wih my brother Ken who knew him quite well he showed us all around amazing, made from seaweed somehow but a secret he kept. apHe was quite a loner. 12 mile where my Mum Dad started married life, there was a real community there of little homes (called baches now) very populated. Have a hand drawn map with lots information that Ian Innes did. His daughter gave it to me but would need her permission to show. My grandmother and greatgrandmother lived there right at the top of the hill from the mile bluff 10 bluff on lefthand side. Wished I had a place there now!!!!!
James Newby I lived in the white batch in the left of the photo for a while ,Peter lived across the road and had some amazing things in his house,Also his nephew was John Britten who made the amazing motorcycle that is named after him.

Peter Gray When Sandra,s Dad retired from the R / way,s in 1962 her Mum was given one of Peters orchids as part of her presentation, we still have that orchid almost 60 years later. Well made N Z

Tracy Piner Mahon There’s grandads house, Basil Piner, he built a fishing boat in his big back shed. Used to love going out to the twelve mine, used to get very car sick though.
He had a very good spot, sea was right across the road.
Dorothy Piner Visited cousin Basil in January 1973 when construction of the fishing boat (Miss Westland) was underway outside the front door. Had to virtually walk under the keel to access the front door! Had a great dinner with him - Paua first course, Crayfish second course ! :-) Ian (Ted) Piner.
