LinkFacebookCommentsPete Doncliff help me out people..where was this situated?
Liz Turner Wasn't it at the top end of Palmerston Street across the road on the same side as Digger's?
Brigitte McIntosh Any idea where in Palmerston Street The City Hotel was? Also...Classic Drycleaners? Opposite NBS Theatre maybe?
Jan Stevenson Not sure but was the Bonanza (Black Shark) situated where the City Hotel was. I know that part of an old hotel was at the back of the Bonanza when we owned it.
John Anderson Between Parkhouses and the Real Estate ...operated by Dick and Cis Knight in the 50s Classic Drycleaners in the same vicinity owned by Graeme Chamberlain .
John Anderson Yes Bridgette your right on the button
Brigitte McIntosh Actually its Pete's mum that first suggested that area, I just put it out there...but thanks John for confirmation
Jan Stevenson Dick Knight's hotel was on the corner next to the Kiwi Milk Bar and opposite our current Library.
John Anderson Jan ...sorry to correct that was Dick,s last hotel took it over from Bill Spence ....think it was called the Prince of Wales .
Jan Stevenson Didn't realize that was his last hotel! Ian & I are confused now :)
Pete Doncliff correct John....That was The Prince of Wales....they had the City before that, and Cis's sister and her husband had The City....
Pete Doncliff I just cant place the 2 buildings either side.....
Brigitte McIntosh John, which Real Estate do you mean? There are two...the one on the corner or the one beside the hair salon....Wish....Harcourts have or had a small office there...
John Anderson The one opposite the Cos with the car park ...ME WITH ALL THIS INFO ABOUT HOTELS ANYONE WOULD THINK I WAS AN ALCOHOLIC WHICH WOULD BE MILES FROM THE TRUTH .....some more info on Dick and Cis Knight I believe their first hotel was the Kynnersley at Mokihinui now called the Boiler House or something like that .
Brigitte McIntosh Nah we all know you were a Milk Bar kid John lol
John Anderson So you reckon a "Milk bar Cowboy " you could be right Haha ha .
Pete Doncliff mystery solved....I think....the building on the right (Classic Drycleaners) is where Reynolds Shoes are located now....please correct me if I am wrong
Kerry Collins The City whilst closed was still standing for a lot of years after it closed
Helen Callaghan If I remember correctly on the otherside of City hotel was Green's menswear. Then on the corner where parking is now was Millers,Mt O'brien which then became Singer sewing machine shop. There were 4 boys in the Knight family. They went to North School and lived at City Hotel late 40's early 50's.
Brigitte McIntosh The photo shown was in the 60's so yes that would be right
Pete Doncliff by the way David Mann.....great to see the group up and running again :)
Kerry Collins You are in the right place from memory. My mum worked for Dick and Cis. The boys were Rex, Ritchie and Ross. The girls were June, Kaye. I think I have missed a boy. The one who became a Doctor..Ritchie and Kaye died young. Rex and Ritchie went to th...See More
John Anderson That's interesting Kerry ....I met up with Cis when I was in Auckland and was always pleased to catch up on Coast news .
Kerry Collins She loved all the news from Westport. I remember she was always immaculate and served in the perfume section. She lived on the North Shore
Jenny Caldwell I met June's son at Trudi's place. I told him about Dick and Cis and mentioned that young June had had eye problems. he told me that she had virtually gone blind last year. Small world, but when you consider Chas and I lived there 1958 she had a pretty good run. I only recall the two boys Rex in the Navy and Richard I think as the Doctor.
Kerry Collins Rex and Ritchie were in the Navy. Ritchie was still in when he died of cancer. All her boys names started with R. It will come to me
Kerry Collins Just checked Ritchie was 27 when he passed away and Kaye was 25.
Dell Robertson Barry Knight, was a much loved doctor at Tokoroa for many years. Retired from that, not too long ago, perhaps last year
Kerry Collins That is right I knew he was up that way. He was the only with a Name starting with R.
Kerry Collins Thanks Dell the puzzle is complete
Janelle Ranger June got a bionic eye a couple of years ago (not sure if it was both I'll have to ask Mum). Anyway it was one of the first operations like it apparently and she can see a lot better now
