DescriptionFrom left - Ben McDonagh (a fire brigade man) Jim Webb (a steward from the Westport Coal Company's SS Canopus) Jim Burley (sitting, son of the Mine owner) Syd Todd (in bucket), Jack Watson (who left for the WW1 front soon afterwards) Unknown man (but believed to be another steward on the Canopus, a regular caller at Westport in those days), & James H. Burley (the Mine owner).

The mine, one of the first to be established in the Lower Buller Gorge in the early 1900's, produced semi-bituminous coal for the domestic market in Westport & Inangahua Junction for more than 50 years before it closed down.Date of Photo1917.Map^[1]ContributorBlacks Point Museum
