DescriptionCOAL
The fuel for our kitchen range was coal and our coal man was Roddy Inglis, who delivered our coal by the sack. He would arrive with his big blue Chevrolet truck, with the whole deck loaded with bags of coal, each weighing one hundred weight [112 pounds].
With years of practice behind him, he would effortlessly hoist a bag onto his back, which was protected from the lumpy contents by a sheet of leather strapped to his back.
He would tip it out of the bag, onto one of the two heaps of coal in the coal shed. One heap [Strongman mine coal] was the very hot burning coal to boost the fire, while the other [Rewanui mine coal] which was good to bank the fire up to burn for a long time. ContributorBrian McIntyre
