DescriptionThe aerodrome at Greymouth, where extensive improvements are being carried out. The ground is bound by the sea on one side and by a tidal lagoon on the other.
To provide a better runway for aircraft, the aerodrome is to be further extended into lagoon, a considerable part of which will be reclaimed.

Geoffrey Bell That's Preston Road in the foreground. The Aerodrome is at the end of it. It looks unusable. It may have been closed for the improvements, although it looks like a usable runway on a diagonal by the lagoon.

Don Hutton After this during my 1940s childhood and 1950s youth the aerodrome was just a large grassy space which extended from the lower left to about the centre of the photo. The only bitumen surface was an apron in front of the hangar you can see here to the left of the end of Preston Road. In the ATC we drilled on that bitumen under the command of Flt Lt Harvey O'Loughlin and WO Pat Kelly.The road in front of the hospital (far left) turned right and extended out to the beach where there was a council dump. You can just pick out the Karoro Cemetery and maybe the old abattoir top left of centre at the far end of Shelley St.
