Three Newman Bros service cars. Stevens & Sons (Chch) bodied International on the left and a Stevens & Sons bodied Cadillac 353 V8 on the right. The Cadillac 353 service car in the middle is dear to me. Built for Newman Bros (North Island) Ltd in 1936 as their fleet No 9 by my Grandfather, Dave Taylor, at Crawley Ridley & Co Ltd of Wellington. It was the 'Evening Post' car and ran the papers through to Levin, Palmerston North and Woodville until around 1947/48 when it was sent south to the Nelson-based fleet of Newmans and re-numbered No 19. Used mainly as an over load and back up car, it was donated by Jack Newman to the Whakarewa Boy's Home in Motueka in 1952 being, so far as is known, the second to last Cadillac to come out of the Newmans fleet. Obtained in 1969 by the late John Murphy and held by him until 2008 when it came to me upon his decease, it lives today with a couple of other ex Newmans Cadillac 353 service cars, the last of their kind now left.Date of Photoca early 1930s.Map[1] ContributorMoe Bowes

Great photo Moe.
Ian Schroder
The good old pub seen a few miss the step behind the pump on way to gents on the right.
Brian McIntyre
I can imagine that Ian Schroder especially after hours.
Ian Schroder, Wondered if it was the gents.
Ian Schroder
sure was painted with the old red lead breather pipe from petrol storage tank clamped to it.
William Albert Whitehead
The old outhouse , before new ones installed out back. The driver of that front Cadillac would be told by Chas Potter to turn your wheels to left, in case brakes fail. I poured plenty of petrol out of that Plume pump.I can still hear them saying "Can I get some petrol Scotty", and him saying "Billy will fix you". I remember a yank who looked up and told his wife this pace is Timefora, the sign on pubd (which I repainted once said Tim for a . (spot, which for Scotsmen was a nip on whisky). I can remember the Inangahua river being banked up to a yard inside steps, where Paddy Murphy and Potsy Wells sat.

Was it a long drop or just urinal?
Lyn Moe
Geez ,if it was a long drop and with the bowser breather there you would think twice about lighting one up.
Zody Ensor
Hahaha.
William Albert Whitehead
It had an urinal for three at once. The room behind bowser is Sample room parlour and remember Archie McLaughlin (Magistrate) and Jock Burgess (traffic cop) used to go in there and have a few drinks on way back to Westport from Court Day in Reefton. Both top chaps. Jock and Curly Palmer (Reefton cop) used to turn blind eye to me having a steer of Newmans caddies when only 13 or 14. End unit with balcony is where Uncle Abbie, Aunt Elizabeth lived. Our house was behind that. Joe Stuart (uncle of Brent) bought it off Dad.

Moe this is outside Berlins Hotel in the late 40s and the service cars are Cadillac 353FF numbers 19 and 32, all according to official records in Travelling with Newmans. The International D35 was built by HCF Stevens in ChCh.
Peter Westwood
Moe you are right it is time for a spot and the boys room is on the side, just like William said.
Peter Westwood
This is not the Coast but just as interesting, the same Caddy no 32 at the front waiting to load outside Hotel Nelson Feb 1940.

Newman's service cars as they were called in the day...
Kevin O'Regan
Wasn't much different in the early 50's . Fuel browsers in the same place and the long boarding house in the background. Eggers and Stuart family's resided there the Tee intersection where the late Geoff Meadows was frequently waved down for speeding through in his Buick trying to make starting time of pictures starting in Reefton 21 miles away. Sadly building destroyed 68 earthquake.

As a child I travelled to Greymouth on one of Newman's service cars usually on a Saturday morning.

In the mid 60's my dad bought an ex Newmans Cadillac Bus (30's) that had been made into a motorhome. I understood it might have done the Nelson to Westport run. The body was cut off behind the windscreen and was moved to the back of the farm in the Mai Mai Valley as a "shooters hut" The remaining front sheet metal was used and a "cab" was formed from wood. No doors. I used to run and hide if they came to school to give me a ride home. It was eventually cut up to make 2 trailers.
