M. Denhard, Wallsend Bakery
Post Office 1900 (Tom Hartill collection)
Malcolm Gollan
My Great Great Grandfather and mother, John and Hannah Mosley arrived from Dipton, County Durham to Wallsend in 1887. They initially lived in a tent behind Denhard's Bakery where Hannah had twins not long after arrival. Only one survived and I'm sure living in a tent didn't help. They soon built a house in Dobson and the family grew to 13. John worked as a mine carpenter at Brunner. Wallsend comes from Wallsend at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall so would have been familiar to the Mosley's on arrival at least in name.

I remember my uncle and aunt ran the Wallsend pub during the sixties Fred and Sis Holmes. I remember visiting them on the way through from Blackball and their was a swing bridge over the Grey river which was a huge attraction for us Holmes kids, our parents were were Alan and Shirley Holmes from Cameron’s then latterly from Cobden then Rapahoe where mum and Dad built a home
Les Holmes Germanicus
Carole I remember one cloudy day about this time of year us calling in here. While mum and dad were inside, dad with his beer and mum with her sherry us kids had a glass raspberry and lemonade. We had to stay outside, so we went onto the bridge as part of amusing ourselves. It took a bit of work to make it moving with our weight and strength.
