DescriptionThis school was opened from 1890 to 1926.

Following disagreement about the Land of Promise (Umere) pupils crossing the river for schooling at Promised Land (Arapito), the settlers petitioned the Education Board for a school of their own.
The children were not receiving regular tuition because the river was often impassable. This was in 1886 but it wasn't until the Inspector visited the area the following year, and the residents made a definite application, that the Board decided to grant money to assist with the setting up of a school.
Frank McNabb gave land for a section, sited at the entrance to what was H. T. McNabb's farm, and the £110 was given by the Board towards the project.
By 1889 the School was ready and the first teacher, Miss Susan Blane, was appointed, beginning her duties in 1890.
This was an "aided" School - that is it was financed and controlled by the Education Board.
The first year the roll stood at 19, never rising above 22 and gradually falling to an average of 12 to 14 over the latter years. Nevertheless, this School was mentioned several times in Inspectors reports for its high percentage of attendance. In 1911 the average was 91%, the highest in the Nelson area. In his report of 1917 one Inspector seemed rather shocked that the one toilet was in the bush on the river bank!
How many pupils remember the trips, falsely contrived, made to this outhouse to spy on a certain teacher and her wooer, "spooning" under the big macrocapa tree!
