DescriptionThe original mill at the North Beach was established in the early 1900's, and was a combined flax and sawmill owned by W. R. Simpson and run by his brother James.
This mill was worked spasmodically for about 20 years. After an accident at the mill in 1909, it was closed down, and the flaxmill re-opened on a new site near the old Simpson homestead.Date of Photoearly 1900s.Map^[1]ContributorClaire Ward

Bob Laing I used to cut flax while at Buller High School
That would be in the mid 1960s. A mate and I would over a weekend cut, bundle and carry out to where you could load it onto a truck about 1.5-2 tons. Five pounds a ton, or somewhere between four to five pounds each for the weekend. We would be physically done, filthy and rich by the end of the weekend. Dad used to cart the flax into the Westport flax mill for us on Monday evening.
