WALLSEND MINE OFFICE SAVED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, Wednesday. Early this morning a fire destroyed the Union and Empire Hotels, the Public Library, McLuskie’s billiard-room, and Erickleton’s residence, at Wallsend. The use of the mine-pump and hose saved the mine office and Williams’s residence.
It is reported that the fire started in the Union Hotel. Portion contents of the Empire Hotel and Frickleton’s residence was saved. Particulars of the insurances arc not yet available.

It was unbelievable what went on in those days nearly all of the pioneering towns on the coast had very well established fire brigades by then but not the towns of the Grey Valley, of note to me is that Notown was completely destroyed by fire in the 1800,s but there was no impetus to form brigades.The Brunner Borough Council kicked off the first after a couple of years going through the protocols in 1959 and Ngahere,Blackball and Moana followed on all of these locations were a long way from Greymouth on rough gravel roads
