Jack N Pat Manderson My cousins Jack & Rex Broome, Bert Elliot and John Baxter used to travel up from Hokitika to play for Cobden in the late 40's early 50's as there was no league in Hokitika. Their father Alex Broome was a great fan of rugby league and played for Runanga in the early days. He bought back a pair of league boots from Aust. with aliminium ?sprigs on them for his son Rex but they were too small for him so I was given them. Well, I was playing rugby for my High school at the time and on the 1st day that I wore them they had a sprig inspection and they asked where I had got them from. There were only leather sprigs in N.Z. at that time and I was told that they were illegal so I had to put on my old boots. Bugger !!!!!. Never got to wear them.

William Albert Whitehead HISTORY LESSON. My cousin Jenny (Mrs Nick) Nahu (nee Stewart, daughter of Norma (Dad's sister) and Claude Stewart, whose three brothers all played for BOP) is now long-serving Secy of BOP Rugby League. Son-in-law Paul Nahu also played for BOP. My daughter Sharon is Secy of Nelson (Tasman) RL, another, Lisa, who began League reports on Maori Radio here, was on School Board in Waikato (husband, Mike Wilson was recent NZ Maori RL selector). Another daughter wrestles under Scarlett and is NZ women champion at present. Also related to Forrests, Harts, Mandersons, all top RL folk. I was a bit of traitor, played Rugby Union first (for Inangahua 8st 7lb reps v Coast on Victoria Park a fortnight before WC beat Gt Britain in 1946 on same ground. Favourite uncle (Bill Clark, son of Margaret, nee Manderson) and WS (Scotty) Clark, Vice Pres of WC RL 1922-29), played for Inangahua v Canterbury in 1937. Dad was neutral, he refereed Inangahua versus Buller in both codes, and both on Victoria Square, Westport. I was useless at history and geography at school, but finished up as a top tour driver for group Travel (NZ) Ltd, and could tell folk the heights of all mountains, depths of lakes, etc. Topped Nelson College in maths, and everyone told me I should be a surveyor.
