Child's boot found near Barrytown.

DescriptionOld Victorian or Edwardian child's boot that we found in the bank near Golden Sands Road. It is only 17cm long but has the hob nails and copper toe for hard work. 100 years old at least I reckon. Kids used to have to walk from Golden Sands Rd along the beach to school at Cargill Rd.

This boot was exposed by sea erosion in the bank opposite Golden Sands rd Barrytown. It is only 6.5" (16cm) long.Map^[1]ContributorSophie Allan

Until the 1990's when the tarriffs were lifted and quality low priced footwear came available. shoe repairs and bootmakers were still very common. Today if they wear out ,you throw them out.

Our dear Mum, born 1917 into a poor family in Blaketown, used to relate "going barefoot to school" to save her shoes from additional wear and tear. And putting Nugget over the holes in her stockings to cover them. Them was the days boyo!

I've posted this before but it is relevant to the thread. Here is a tiny boot found near one of the early Liverpool mines upstream of Rewanui, Middle Brake and the main Siberia Settlement. It would have been an extremely isolated spot for a mother and child back in the early 1900's. It was found approx 300m from the site of the mine managers house for the No 1 mine at Top Brake but on the other side of the creek close to where some singlemen's huts once were. I've wondered who the child might have been who wore this boot.

You got given a pair of shoes, you polished them every day, they got resoled, restiched, and replated as needed, when you grew out of them the next in line got them.

Almost all the boots I found, 21 altogether, had a lot of wear. You could see where patches had been added to the sole.

In the those early days, most people walked everywhere. Only the wealthy had horses and carriages. Sturdy footwear was essential. To prevent the vulnerability of the leather soles, heel and toe plates were necessary. (Even the Romans had hobnails on their sandals. )
