Ngahere SS was a British Cargo Steamer of 1,090 tons built in 1908 by A. Rodger & Company, Port Glasgow, Yard No 407 for Blackball Coal Company, Christchurch, NZ.
In 1923 she was purchased by Mann, George & Co, London.
On the 12th May 1924 she ran aground and was wrecked on Greymouth Bar, when carrying a cargo of coal and timber from Wellington to Miramar.

WELLINGTON (N.Z.), Friday. The Nautical Court, which inquired into the wreck of the steamer Ngahere, in its judgment, found that the harbourmaster committed a serious error of judgement in assuming, without further sounding, that the depth of water on the bar was sufficient to allow the Ngahere to pass out safely when a vessel drawing 3ft. 4in. (less had
touched the bar), and in not communicating such information to the master of the Ngahere. The stranding and wreck of the vessel were not caused or contributed to by wrongful act of the master or any of his officers or crew. The Court ordered the
