CommentsPeter Dennehy - Top looks like a drive in tea rooms. Ha ha.
Robert Mathewson - Detroit diesel power, good trucks.
Nigel Roberts - Poor old A99 Westminster.
Mark Burgess - Cars were cars back then. Belt it back out she will be right.
Chris Barnett - My parents had a fish and chip shop here before moving to Greymouth in the late 50s.
Claire Ward - Group admin - Where in Reefton was their shop, Chris?
Chris Barnett - I think it was on this site or close to it. The original fish and chip shop burnt down. My mother was a nurse in Reefton and she would take fish to Waiuta from the shop when she did her visits.
Claire Ward - Group admin - What was your Mum's name? Do you have any photos of your parents shop, or any of Reefton, etc?
Chris Barnett - Her name was Nettie she was originally from Palmerston. She did her nurse training in Whangarei and Reefton. My father was from Reefton. My Brother has got some photos so I will see what he has got Claire.
Claire Ward - Group admin - Wonderful, it'll be great to see those photos, Chris, thanks! What was your Dad's name? Where did you parents live here in Reefton?
Chris Barnett - His name is Jack Barnett. He was brought up at Blacks Point. His brother was the local barber. Bert Barnett.
Claire Ward - Group admin - So there might be some Blacks Point photos that your brother has? We don't see many photos of Blacks Point, so I hope he does. Where was your Uncle Bert's barber shop?
Chris Barnett - I am not sure where his shop was. I am sure I have seen some old photos of the house on the other side of the swing bridge at Blacks Point. I will try and get them.
Claire Ward - Group admin - Thanks sooo much, Chris!
Arthur Bass - Bert was also Albie. Lynda Ladners Dad.
Chris Barnett - Yes he was Albie. We used to call him Uncle Bert. He was a lovely man. I used to visit him and Marion every time I went through Reefton, they were so nice to us.
Arthur Bass - Albies Barber Shop was between Homemakers and Katie Cohens Claire. I think the black tiles on the front were/are still in place.
Chris Barnett - Claire My parents lived at 64 Shiel St. It was my Nanas house. The neighbours house was so close that when my mother needed someone to look after her little ones she would pass them through the Windows without having to leave the house.
Tracey Ramsay - Spent heaps of time as a teenager hanging out in the tearooms.
Raquel Wilson - My uncle Cliff Hibbs and auntie June Hibbs used to run the tea rooms here when my dad Ron Hibbs was the policeman. They used to tell me they made their pies out of squashed possums...fun times. Alison Hibbs remember?
Claire Ward - Would you, or any of your family, have any photos of the time you Uncle & Auntie owned the tearooms, Raquel? or any photos of Reefton at all? Did they hand down the squashed possum pie recipe to you? :D
Raquel Wilson - Lol I'm not sure but I can check.
Claire Ward Brilliant, thanks. I hope so!
Alison Hibbs - I used to work in the tearooms out the back making sandwiches etc.
Mawson N Kay Shaw - I worked at Broadway tearooms for Colin & June Bartly. We had some great times there. I am a bit foggy after that, I worked with June Hibbs, & I think, Cliff & June bought the tearooms after Bartly`s. Someone might be able to help me with this. I actually thought Cliff was a policeman in Reefton for a while. They were a great couple I remember lots of laugh`s with them. Mawson worked with Colin Bartly out in the bakehouse making pies, he also drove the old van full of pies down to the racecourse, they couldn't keep up making pies, they sold as soon as the old van arrived down at the race course.
Elaine Lawson Stone - We always call in on our way to Greymouth and back :)
Ruth Galloway - I think that Cochranes had the tearooms before the Hibbs. I went to school with Glenda approx 1964.
Alan N Barb Cochrane - Yes that's correct Ruth that was my uncle and aunty Bobby and Glen also my Grandparents owned it in the late 40s. They sold and took over owens cake kitchen in Tainui St, Greymouth.
Claire Ward - Would you, or any of your family, have any photos of the time your Uncle & Auntie & Grandparents owned the tearooms, Alan N Barb Cochrane?
Alan N Barb Cochrane - I remember seeing some of all us kids sitting in the booths eating ice cream sundaes. I will check with my sister.
Claire Ward - Lovely, thank you, Alan N Barb Cochrane. I hope there are some photos, as it's great to see how the place looked back then & the people that ran it. :)
Neil Smith - Cliff Hibbs was the local policeman in the early 1970’s before Ron and Alison went there.
Arthur Bass - Bartleys had it too. Mike Kennedys patents. Pete and Linda Skelton. Mark and Ann Marie. Jim and Helen Foster then the name change.
