DescriptionMaximilian Ridge of Elie de Beaumont, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. This photo is taken from the eastern side of the ridge which is climbed from the Burton Glacier in South Westland. Looking over the ridge to the Tasman Sea.
The first ascent was done by Ed Cotter, Ed Hillary, George Lowe, Earle Riddiford, in January 1951.The peak was named after Élie de Beaumont, (born Sept. 25, 1798, Canon, Fr.—died Sept. 21, 1874, Canon), geologist who prepared the great geological map of France in collaboration with the French geologist Ours Pierre Dufrénoy. One peak near the head of the Fox Glacier is named after Dufrenoy but spelt Dufresne..Map^[1]ContributorBob McKerrow

James Lewis Did you access the ridge from the head of the Whataroa River or the Callery? Iv hunted from the Whymper hut and always admired that area!
