DescriptionDropped in to see former Franz Josef mountain guide Peter McCormack this morning. It is always so rewarding to spend a few hours with Peter for he is a born story-teller and has so much knowledge to pass on. Today we spent a long time piecing together our respective knowledge of the Waikukapa River which flows from the Jalf Glacier and the Bauman Snowfield.

Peter remembered the story of Alec Graham who climbed a number of peaks in the Fritz Range with two clients and decided to return via the Waikukupa valley. He arrived at the farmers house by the road and asked to use the telephone to call for someone to pick him up. The farmer invited Alec and his two clients in for tea while they were waiting. The tea cups, saucers and plates were all labelled 'The Glacier Hotel', the Hotel that Alec and brother Peter owned. When asked what he did about the stolen crockery, Alec said " It made me feel at home."

Robin Donaldson Assistant manager.. dad had passed away in vermouth I had come back from overseas saw the job at Franz and spent 18 months there..loved it . Mum was a mitchell from mikonui and spoke fondly of your dad

Trish McCormack omg really! That was such a traumatic job! I opened a door with a master key and found a lesbian couple having sex! Have never forgotten it!
