At that time we had been one of the top 3 economies in the world since the turn of the century, how much easier to afford the best infrastructure.
We stayed in that high spot, slowly pushed down by small oil producing countries, and then moved out of the top 20 during finance minister and PM Muldoons watch, and have languished about 50th since.
That might seem about the right place, except for where we were for the first two thirds of last century. It's much harder to pay for infrastructure, at #50th ranking than at #3, and our generation and later generations were not really taught to appreciate the high level of economic success that had built bridges and bought ferries etc.
