My mum Kathleen Hunt (married Leicester Stewart) worked at Greymouth Exchange. I think she started in November 1951. She also worked at Wicks Drapery and Blanchfields Bakery

The "Chertsey Mid Canterbury" exchange was run by Mrs Doig was the post mistress out of the old Railway station. Us kids hated using the phone as it was always for had and you never knew who was listening on the party line. 107R short long short ring was our number.

I worked at the Wellington Toll Rooms in Stout Street, stayed at the P&T Hostel in Johnsonville had to commute back and forwards to work. Mid 60's then went back to Greymouth after 9 months.

I used one in the Brick House, Railway Offices. Had their own telephone network throughout NZ. All of us Office Ladies could do it. Was a change from Typing. Loved it.

I worked in Duvauchelle exchange 1960-64. The exchange operated 6am to midnight Monday to Saturday and 8am to 8am on Sundays. With only 3 toll lines to Christchurch many toll calls had to be booked. With instant calls and information available on your cell phone 24/7 it is now hard to imagine the old days.
