About this image
DescriptionDouglas DC-3 Skyliner ZK-AOF at Westport Airport mid 1960's.
D Walker photo.
Mike Minehan ..In 1956 I was as a 10 year-old able to fly from Hoki to Wellington, via Westport and Nelson where passangers and mail were off and onloaded, and the machine refuelled each time. An NAC DC-3, like on the photo, a 28-seater I think. On the return trip down the Coast at about 1000ft was invited up front into the cockpit. About Point Elizabeth the pilot asked where I came from and I pointed left ahead to "Lake Ryan" in front of our farm in Cobden where we saw the cows coming in for milking, Mum on the front porch waving her pinnie as we flew by. A slight curve back out to sea to skirt Greymouth and down on to Hokitika. Before landing I was allowed to hand out the lollies to all passengers too! A very momentous trip for a young lad.PhotographerD WalkerDate of Photo1960Map[1] ContributorChris Burles

For 3 years From 1970, I caught the DC3 from Westport to Nelson and then another to Wellington to go to boarding school. Quite a trip 3 times a year!
Kerry Keating
My first flight was on one, Hokitika to Wellington. Spewed most of the time. Vibrations from engine, through the wing, into me.
Jenny Caldwell
My first flight was 1958. NAC then...Westport to Nelson, Nelson to Paraparaumu (wellington then) thence to Auckland. At about 10,000 the did feell the bumps a bit. Personal service on one trip where the hostie sewed buttons on our child's clothes whilst en-flight. Myron
Alan Johnson
went on one of these many times from wpt to wn in those days and even on a Westport to Wellington to attend the the Wellington Cup..Pro Perkins an Digger organised it all

During the 50s / 60s every year in the school holidays my mother & I would take the flights from Westport to Wellington & on to Auckland. The passenger list used to be published in the Westport News. I can remember the air pockets & the ear ache!

Den O'Brien I must have looked like trouble as I was never invited into the cockpit. Or even the toilet for that matter
Sandy Brears
I saw one of those in a shed down near Franz Joseph in the mid 60's, I think it was going to be restored at some point
