In the years before railway and motor vehicle travel became commonplace in New Zealand, horse drawn coaches carried passengers, parcels and mail, often over narrow and sometimes dangerous tracks.
This image is from the Ministry of Works collection, and shows the Midland Coach travelling through the Otira Gorge in 1895. By the 1920's, motor travel had taken over horse drawn coaches.
