Description No1, later E1, was delivered along with the first five electric locos before tunnel opening in 1923. There has been a photo up showing the delivery train with the six very valuable locos behind a comparatively tiny F class steam engine on the Bealey Bridge at Arthur's Pass. No1 was used on the electric overhead maintenance when the power was off.

The photo does not show the tender that held half the storage battery capacity. No1 could operate for a shorter time without the tender. The Working platform above the cab could be raised and lowered mechanically as could the collapsible handrail system. Because of the grade in the tunnel there were three braking systems - an early example of fail safe? She was written off in 1930. Comment by Peter Kerr.
