Court Judgement in relation to rail accident Hokitika 1937

DescriptionOn 18 Jan 1937 an auctioneer was killed and a group of nuns injured when a railcar crashed off the tracks near Hokitika. There were about 20 people on the railcar which left Hokitika at 4.25pm bound on a short journey to Greymouth. Driver Percy Evans was at the controls and he had slowed down to navigate a road crossing at Stafford. A moment later the railcar began bumping, flinging him from his seat as the vehicle leapt into the air and overturned. But auctioneer William Jeffries of Hokitika had crushed ribs and lung and chest injuries and died at the scene. His wife Anne Marie Jeffries was injured. The subsequent inquiry found that the derailment was probably due to loose stones being scattered on the track (possibly by a herd of cattle that had been driven across it about an hour before) and that the driver was not to blame for the tragedy. The coroner returned.....
