Lyell - late 1800s.

DescriptionLyell was a thriving gold-mining town in the 1880s and 1890s, and a major stopping point on the winding road through the upper Buller Gorge. Most of the trees have been removed from the surrounding hills.

The town was abandoned by the middle of the 20th century, and nowadays it is the site of a Department of Conservation camping ground. The forest has regenerated.

Strange as it may seem, we didn't have any bother with sandflies when we visited in 1985. And we walked all around the old cemetery as well as the village site. They must have known that we weren't coasters, and that our blood was not worth bottling. The advantages of being a "Loopy "
