DescriptionPhoto shows a portion of the coal flume from Hunter's Mine to the loading area on Seal Island, where it was intended to directly load coal into the ships hold. The venture was abandoned because it was found the sea conditions and rocky shoreline too dangerous. The Price family lived across the road from the hill where the flume started and one of the rellies married into the Hunter family. The Price family used to walk across the flume to seal Island. Not sure how the fire started that burnt it down.

I've been out to the island to look at the remains. There were heaps of seals there and a huge shag colony.

When following the shore line around by boat I snapped this pic showing a few seals and shags. The main concentration of shags was on the other side (seaward side) of the island. Seals were scattered about both on land and in the water. Some seals had climbed high above the water line. I've previously posted a pic of remains of the coal loading structure foundations.
