DescriptionThis photo is Rebecca Johnston, later Hunter, Jamieson, Neilon who was my great grandmother. Widowed for the first time while in her early 30s she ran a pub in Nelson Creek (see second photo) and raised a large family of children. Date Created11th October 2018CommentsGeoffrey Bell I will explain myself Stephanie Keen. I am no relation, but the Magee family were very close friends to my mother's family, the Molloys from Kotuku. Sarah was a very close friend of my mother's mother Honora Molloy (Crimmins). Honora died in 1928 of heart failure just before giving birth to her 13th child. My mother was the 4th oldest and oldest female and aged 16 at the time. Two siblings just below her had died in infancy, so that left 6 younger than her, the youngest being 3 years old. My mother had to abandon her education and stay at home to care for her siblings. This is where Sarah Magee came in. She was on call all the time for any advice my mother required and was a wonderful person and became part of our family, being included in all the weddings and other special family occasions. When they moved to Greymouth I can remember visiting them. Old Tom died on my birthday. Not long before she died, my mother gave me a small Birthday Book and said it was her mothers and she had kept it by her bedside from the time of her mother's death. The book contains the dates of births, deaths and marriages for all our familiy prior to 1928 and also many names of family friends, including many of Rebecca's family. I treasure that book. Part of my family research has entailed figuring out who was who in the book. Many photos of family friends were kept and are now held by me.
