DescriptionGeoffrey Bell This is where the Bell Hill Settlement was. Carry on past here until you reach the 'T' intersection, right to Haupiri and left to Nelson Creek. About half-a-mile to the left (on the Nelson Creek Road), was Jack Bro's Bell Hill Sawmill.

Grey River Argus 5/2/1920 states that company will commence cutting timber for mill houses at an early date and will be in full working order within a few months - not expected to make a start for another two months. If labour available will employ approx 80 men and output should be in vicinity of 25,000 feet per day.

This was a hard luck mill An early band saw, perhaps the earliest in NZ. Originaly imported by Brownlee's at Carluke to cut out the Opouri valley.to which Brownlee controlled the access. But the Marlborough Tbr Co got the upper valley by taking the timber up and down a ridge to shipping at Nydia Bay. Mill moved to Bell Hill not long before the depression. Apparently it was a mill that could not be run short handed so it was all go or no go. Depressed times meant no go.George Colligan

Brownlees shifted their equipment and machinery from Carluke (Rai Valley) to Bell Hill. Quite a feat. My grandfather was involved.

Looks like quite a big operation. Plenty of timber around the building.
