From Facebook
Date Created25th October 2018CommentsPatrick Casserly That a great photo Heather was that the old Opera House Picture theatre
Alan Messenger That was my first thought but I think the Opera House would have been there by then. Also is no railway line and no Methodist church and no Catholic Church spier. Unless is a lot earlier
Linda Hughes Looking at the street angles certainly looks like the opera house corner, plus the railway line. The Methodist church would be hidden by building on the left.
Alan Messenger I can’t see the railway line Linda
Linda Hughes Just behind the people, and where the buggy going over.
Alan Messenger Your eyesight is better than mine, but if railway line is there it is definitely the right location
Patrick Casserly It's taken before the railway line was there it came laters
Patrick Casserly Well their no flashing lights and bells

Linda Hughes I've looked with a magnifier and it definitely looks like a railway line. That building has1895 on it so photo is obviously later than that.
Alan Messenger Ha ha, with a magnifying glass I also can see the railway line and the hall building looks like the Opera House
Linda Hughes That's good to hear!
Geoffrey King The Public Hall is in fact the Opera House . Yes there is a railway line in the picture I am looking at, perhaps no electricity yet, as the street lamp is gas. The date on the Public Hall / Opera House as we knew it, says 1895 so picture after that dat…See More
Allan Archer School of mines ?..Geoffrey,,, was beside Revies.
Brian Beban It says 1899 in fact
Alan Messenger Look like power lines to me!
Geoffrey King well as I said Alan perhaps no electricity yet but then again perhaps there is but the street light is gas unless of course the electric light is somewhere else.
Don Hutton Geoffrey King The lines at the top of the poles would be telephone but there are some heavier cables lower down which could be electricity. Certainly not cable TV!! No motor vehicles in sight so the photo is probably 1900 or earlier.
Geoffrey King Don Hutton the date on the Public Hall says 1895 so there is a clue and u are probably right re the electric cables
Leslie McKendry Suspect the heavier cables are telegrapgh cables not power. Remember at the back of our old house on Omoto Rd there were P&T cables run across and they were about 2" (50mm) mutli pairs, wrapped in steel and bitumen. They looked fairly similar to those.
Don Hutton Leslie McKendry There will probably be a report in the Grey River Argus (Papers Past) reporting when electricity was first reticulated in Greymouth. Some houses still had gas lighting in the 1940s!
Leslie McKendry Don Hutton You would think so, maybe I need to get to 'SpecSavers'!. Unable to find a reference but will continue checking. Suspect Early 1900' more likely
Brian McIntyre Leslie McKendry I was one of the culprits who erected that cable across the slip and behind your house
Leslie McKendry Brian McIntyre Well, the Morkporks & the Possums really liked them
Heather Newby click on the"magnifying glass" icon at the left of the photo in Recollect and scroll up and it enlarges to %200 and you can see a railway line there.
Geoffrey King also Heather the gabled roof building end of bloc wd that be the Masonic Lodge rooms? just asking mind u
Geoffrey King another also lol... the facade of a building up Chapel St has the word Glasgow....wonder what type of business or entity was in that building...so many questions
Leslie McKendry As this picture is late 1890's, suggest the tracks are not train tracks, but there precursor a 'Bush Tram' that initially ran Greymouth to Paroa.
This was opened in 1897 and built to 4ft guage (rather than Railway of 3ft 6")
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Branch
Geoffrey King cool so what was in the Glasgow building
Don Hutton Wikipedia says the line to Hokitika opened in 1893 which could be before this pic was taken Leslie.
Geoffrey King Don Hutton well the picture taken after 1895 look at date on Public Hall so that has cleared that up Don tku
Don Hutton Geoffrey King Intuition, Geoffrey, intuition!!Leslie McKendry Don Hutton Chronolgy in the Wikipedia article would suggest 1903 if you follow the build sequence.
Heather Newby there was a Glasgow Bakery in Westport in 1870
Geoffrey King maybe has a branch in Greymouth...wrong colour to be in Chapel St tho ...lol
Months ago I made a comment about a railway crossing keeper on that crossing but nobody else could remember it. I think that that small building at right is the crossing keepers shed as i remember it
