Glenn Johnston Michael the NZFS did an unpublished report on this area. I'm not sure if you are aware of it? It is packed with historical stuff plus interviews with some of the last miners from Callaghans. I think it was compiled by Ray Hooker. I don't have a copy but you can view but not borrow it from the "History Room" of the Hokitika Library.

Glenn Johnston Michael W Anderson the book is still at the library but was compiled by Ray Hooker not Dave Eastwood who did a similar one about another goldfield area. I've edited my earlier post to reflect this. It has heaps in it about the Callaghans area including some old maps and a bit about the big branch of the Waimea water race that went to Callaghans. (the one you followed)
