My Dad Eric Taylor worked there and lost many workmates/friends He helped in the recovery, some photos in the collection of him. Only 4 other men were given medals though, never knew why he didn't. This tragedy affected so many families on the coast. RIP

This disaster affected Greymouth and districts deeply.
I remember looking from my office in to the centre of town about 2pm on the day of the disaster and Town was completely deserted.

I remember I was at my nana Waltons aged 16 I said to nana 'an earthquake' she straight away said 'no the mine'. My uncle Owen was working at this mine at the time. My first experience of community disaster and how they came together...very sad to lose good people.

We were kids ,living at Blackball .Iwas across the road playing at my mates place -10.20am ,his mum came out -"boys come inside .... Dads at work ,theres been an accident at the mine,I hope hes OK".Sorry cant remember my mates name .

I had an uncle who was a trucker at strongman -he was working that day although not right where the tragedy occurred. Inlater years i rember him saying ,we felt the wind ,heard the rumble ,and knew them it was bad!"

I sat in my godmother Naomi Reid’s kitchen with Cobden women who didn’t know if their husbands were alive or dead. For one of them the worst possible news was waiting..
also my brother’s girlfriend lost her Dad, my Dad lost good friends, workmates and a cousin. A time I’ll never forget.

My late grandfather Joseph Guy worked in this mine for many years. He had only just walked out of the mine on the day of the explosion. Very sad day losing friends and workmates. My mum Ellen (Guy) now King went to school with many of the men who lost their lives.

My Dad lost his very best friend he came out with from Poland together they where like brothers and like a Uncle too us children. My Dad was devastated. Dad wanted him to leave the mine work, Uncle Jon said just awhile longer and I will dont worry!! So so Sad for his wife and three children and everyone who loved all these men who lost their lives on that terrible day!!
