Phyllis Aberbart Didn't know wether to post this or not.so decided to. My sister Karil died of what we now call cot death. I think just before Xmas Day 1946. I think my parents left shortly afterwards. It was never talked about She was buried in the Greymouth cemetery . I found d her unmarked grave a few years ago. I was born about 11mths later.

Kerrie Jenkins-Henry Good to acknowledge your big sister Phyllis Aberbart and glad you found where she is. It must have been partly a 'thing of the times' where the grief was covered with silence. My husband has a little brother in an unmarked grave where we are so far unable to find where he is as is in a private cemetery. It was the same, never talked about.

James Codyre I think the Bell Hill mill was a bandsaw mill and imported in kitset form from the USA.

I think the bandsaw mill was the Nyberg/Brownlee mill. Not that I know much about these things. You may be right Colin Bell - the Jack Bros Mill that was shifted to Bell Hill was known as the big mill because of the size of the motor. I have only had this photo a short time and I am just going on what information I was given. I did wonder whether your photo was taken from the opposite end but it is a bit hard to tell.

Marilyn Smithem Lake Brunner Sawmilling Co, Bell Hill, a large mill with band sawing equipment built over 1914-1921. Brownlees major shareholders used equipment from mill at Havelock in Bell Hill Mill. Later installed it in Ruru when mill rebuilt in 1934

Geoffrey Bell Julie Ann White. According to Archives NZ, James W Rooney died at Ruru and was a Sawmill Hand. If you are in Christchurch, the Public Library have back copies of The Press on microfilm, or the Greymouth Evening Star have back copies.

James Codyre Have "MILLS & MEN " by R.W. Griffen which tells the history of sawmilling in the Grey Valley.You are correct that Brownlees bought machinery down from Havelock to build this mill but much of the threestorey building came from the USA because we salvged heaps of Oregan(Douglas fir) timber after it was abandoned and used for gates and pens in shearing sheds.
