Great photo.
My great grandmother left St Austell at 18 years as both her parents had died.
She spent 5 months on a boat,arrived Lyttelton, walked the bridal path, got on a Cobb and Co Coach to Greymouth, barge to Kamaka and then Horseback to No Town where two of her sisters were living!!

Pam Englefield-Absolum I have her Going Away Outfit,it’s in excellent condition.
She was married 18th January 1875, at Holy Trinity, Greymouth, so was 150 years old in January.

Carolyn Luck I imagined that trip as I read what you wrote. Amazing to think about. A great record and photo. Do you know more about the trip? I had a great great grandmother who travelled from a southern port to Central Otago, but the only thing I know is that she had to sleep under the wagon. There was obviously much more to the trip that would amaze us now.

Mary Moffitt I know a lot about my great grandmother but nothing more about her journey to Greymouth.
She had 10 children, my grandmother was number 8 in the family.
When my grandmother was born the children at No Town school had a half day holiday as my great grandmother had finally had a daughter!!
My great grandmother became a doctor and dentist to the locals at No Town!!
My great grandfather had a general store at No Town, and many other places, he was the first gold buyer in the area.
My great grandmother Emily used to transport the Gold to the bank in Greymouth.
The Gold was always stitched into the hem of her dress and also some of her dresses had a normal pocket and then a very big pocket to carry the Gold.
She rode side saddle to Kamaka and then Barge to Greymouth.
She always carried baking with her and if stopped by a gang just said she was taking baking to a sick friend.
When she got to Greymouth she went to the ladies room and removed the Gold and deposited it at the bank.
What a pioneer she was!!
