Glenn Johnston A lot of good logs were used in the construction of that landing/loading bank by the looks. There are probably more under the hauler (winch). Presumably they were all left behind when the shift was made to the next skid site as that was normal practice. I worked in native logging in parts of Westland and Southland but in hindsight there were a lot of wasteful practices. At one stage the local mill only wanted rimu and that meant other merchantable species such as totara, kahikatea, silver pine and hinau if on the line of the haul tracks were felled and left in the bush. Back then many had the attitude that the resource was inexhaustable. There were and probably still are plenty of hard working skilled men in the forest industry who knew about getting a sweat up, working in the rain and were not scared of a bit of mud getting on skin or clothes!

Myron Caldwell I recall Bradley's and Baigent,s sawmills around Inangahua but can't actually ID this scene. Anderson used to take logs from our area to Murchison in the 50's. One day Tom(?) Rose had the misfortune to have Sutherlands' bridge collapse under the truck and jinker trailer. it was replaced by the current concrete bridge.
