Building of the new Catholic Church in Greymouth

My Story

DescriptionBrian Molloy.." When I was Chairman of the Church Finance Committee a few years ago we did a major refurbishment of the Stained Glass window. Cost $150000 to replace the Oamaru stone which had been damaged in the shift from Chapel St. Huge job which we were lucky enough to get finance from Lotteries, Development West Coast and Barry Colman the then NBR Publisher who had family links to the Coast. Late in my time in that role I am sure the organ was insured for more than the building and the stained glass was virtually impossible to insure because it is priceless. I remember when the specialist stained glass refurbishment man Graeme Stewart from Rangiora took the glass away on his trailer. Backed out the church drive straight onto High Street. I was bloody horrified that the trailer might get cleaned up by a great big truck. He clearly knew what he was doing but for the one organising the money it was a very hairy moment. We also had pretty significant leaking issues around the Bell Tower early on and quotes indicated it was going to cost a fortune to fix. A young Priest Fr Michael Pui turned up got up on the roof (bloody steep too) and basically fixed the problem in short order. Wonderful bloke (as they invariably are) who I think had been an engineer before he became a Priest."
