An explosion occurred on the steamer Defender in Wellington harbor this morning, and at noon the vessel was burning fiercely, and is expected to he a total loss. The vessel is uninsured.
The steamer Defender which was on fire in the stream was towed nway from the wharf. Part of the cargo is of benzine. At 10 o’clock she was ashore on the rocks at Somes Island, and burning fiercely.
The Defender brought a general cargo from Lyttelton, and had loaded 1,200 cases of benzine for that port, when a a fire broke out. It is reported that two of the crew are badly burned. The Defender is a well known trader on this coast,and for many years she has been a regular visitor to Hokitika. Captain Jamieson was for many years in charge and lately Captain Vasta was in command but he left her recently to take charge of the Paeroa.The officers and crew consist of—Master-T. Green; Mate-H. Hart. (Hokitika); Engineer — F.O Peterson; Firemen - T. Bassett and G. McBey; A.B`s - F. Joherg, D Bergquist,H Whiteside, O. Magme; O.S - L. Towns; Cook - A. Mossong.

Note the tar sealed walk way on the training wall. Was popular white bait season. For fishing or just sitting. My sailing story started sitting on there at the end of beach st. Gary Berg would rember
