The more I see and learn about the Otira Gorge / Valley, the more I am in awe of my Dobson ancestors - Edward, Arthur, George & John Howard Dobson (the latter my Great Grandfather) - who had so much to do with the pass, road, railway and tunnel.

I have lived in Otira on 3 different times, I worked in the Railway on all 3 times. When the Rata in full bloom that whole valley is a FANTASTIC sight with the coulor red from the road to end of bush line up high. I also was on the hall committee, 3rd Officer in the Local Fire Brigade, Search & Rescue member, kept the Otira and Jackson pubs open on a going concern OFTEN. Work area was from Inchbonnie through to Aurthers Pass, including the Tunnel. All yards with the POINTS ( blades that switch tracks ) had to be kept clear of snow to operate properly, our job was to make sure they were clear of snow. Still have a great feeling towards Otira, People were great to work with.

Also used to go up Kellys Rang to TV Translator to fix it or check electric cord from Translator down the slip to the hut at the bottom by the road.

Maye Dunn, In those days Maye I was so fit I could meet myself coming back. I was very active around the Otira areas and up the mountains. Specially Kellys Range, Deception River area, working with the Police, we had some dam good Police in that Town.Niaouli Wolf

That’s the rail bridge you can see the road bridge further down the river.
