Inangahua Junction relics. -3 photos and a map -

DescriptionGlenn Johnston.."Recently while tramping in the Inangahua Junction area I took several pics that may have some historic interest to a few people.

Photo 1: there is an old stump with the stepped scarf and back cut still showing under the moss. The surrounding pole silver beech forest has regenerated post logging in the 1940's and 1950's.

Photo 2: shows a wheel from a bogie set beside where the bush tram ran.

Photo 3: shows a large wheel in a creek that may have washed downstream from an old sawmill site?"

Photo 4: I've just hunted down a 1950's map of the area and there was indeed once a sawmill near where the big wheel was photographed. I didn't traverse the area where the mill would once have been as it is on private land being developed for farming. There is quite a bit of interest on this map besides old mill, tramline and hut sites. Note the old formed pack track from the iron bridge on the Buller up to the crest of the range on Boundary Peak.

Brian Borgfeldt My ad worked in the bush during the early 50s in that area and the mill and winch where run by steem engines, then later diesels.

Myron Caldwell Bradleys had a mill up that way. One of the Mill houses got burnt down, occupied by the Grindleys. Nearly everyone in the district offered clothes, furniture etc to help them get up and going again. Community spirit to the fore. No fire brigade back in the 50's.

Noeline McCaughan The third wheel in the gravel looks like it came off the Milling machinery and was the one that was attached to the engine and held the endless belt that drove the breakdown saw.

Hamish Gordon funny, i was looking at that map the other day and specifically the pack track up to Boundary Peak. I'm guessing it is well overgrown now and was probably for stock grazing up on the tops?

Glenn Johnston Hamish Gordon. You are likely correct. I have walked to Boundary Peak but went through from Mt Curtis not up from Iron Bridge end on the old benched track. I think the bush section south of Boundary Peak just had a cut and blazed track as the gradient is quite good and doesn't require earth works for the majority of the way. I didn't see any benching or cuttings on that bit when I walked to and from Bdy Peak.
