George English who became mayor of runanga also fought in the boar war. He left from England and was a buglar. A very dangerous job.

I presume it was some of these young men, who 50 or so years later, I remember trying to march in a bedraggled fashion, as the few living survivors in an ANZAC Day parade. They were a mere handful, at the end of their lives, yet they turned out for ANZAC Day.
