That view is looking East up the valley of the Taramakau river, the tailings are from the Goldsborough field, note the large flume pipes protruding from the ground in the right lower part of the picture. They supplied the water for the sluicing of the soil to help extract the gold.

They were taken under the road out of sight on the right and there were quite a few in situ when I was a child more than seventy years ago. The tailings from The other side of the road were channeled through tunnels (each mining group having it's own tunnel) onto the flat and covered it extensively with a quite deep layer of spoil..

Planted trees on that ground back in the early 70s . I live in Canada now and thinking they must be close to harvest by now .

Garry Wick Looking upstream from Taramakau bridge. Dont think these tailings were planted unlike the dredge tailings below the bridge which are all in pines.

Areas we planted in the Kangaroo and Hochstetter in the late 60's have now had two crops as they only need about 25 years to reach maturity.

The tailings are from the greater Kumara goldrush not the adjacent Goldsborough (Waimea) goldfield.

I think the lady is confused with Goldsborough and Dillmantown. Goldsborough was on the Dillmantown Stafford Road to Hokitika. The topography at Goldsborough / Stafford is nothing like the picture shows. This picture looks like it is from Dillmantown looking down over the Taramakau, just my observation
