Glenn Johnston: I think it may have been taken just on the northern side of where Arthurs Pass village now is and is looking back down the Bealey?

Don Hutton: Maye Dunn Comparing it with modern photos this view is in the Bealey River valley looking downstream towards the Waimakariri River. The photographer was probably standing with his back to the present site of Arthurs Pass village. No sign of the Midland Railway at this time.

Maye Dunn: That makes sense Don..I just couldn't see where it was taken from.Glenn Johnston Don Hutton. I think this actually looks over the site of much of the modern Arthurs Pass Village rather than having been taken on the downstream side of it. Yes to looking downstream toward the Waimakariri River.

Don Hutton: That's entirely possible Glenn Johnston. I felt that the flat bit of road behind the cart / coach might be the flat (Graney's?) before you go up the hill and across a rocky stream before entering Arthurs Pass village.

Mark Healey: I think this is almost certainly taken from at or close to Wardens Creek as you leave the village heading to the West Coast.

Glenn Johnston: Mark Healey That is correct and what I described. I've since lined up the topography in the photo with the contours on a map and the result supports our conclusions.

Glenn Johnston: Don Hutton No Don, Greyneys flat is not behind the cart but further down stream.Trish Rennie Looks like it is taken from where the current Police Station is sited at Arthur's Pass?

Sha Un: Whoa! Fantastic photo. Before Arthur's Pass town was there. You can see the road in the distance when it used to climb the terrace behind the present Doc centre. Love it.
