Linda Sinclair - Remember you visiting us.
John Paget - Linda Sinclair So do I Linda.
Linda Sinclair - Great family times bro!!
Phyllis Aberhart - First time I remember going over it in a car was late 1972, I wasn't the driver. I don't remember the shingle road. When was it tarsealed?
Wayne Leckie - The race track.
Cedric Trounson - The old Zig Zag.
Barbara Kiesanowski - Dad drove that road many times in the 50's. ChCh to Hokitika. The car used to jump around the corners with the corrigation on the road, the dust was not to good in the summer. Took all day with a couple of rest stops on the way.
Anne Offord - I remember so well.
RobnKaren Evans - We had a '57 or'58 Mk 2 for years, looked very much like that one. I can remember many a trip to Christchurch , the odd time all of us had to hop out and give a push to get over the top. That last bit of the Zig Zag was very steep. Amazing bit of road the old boys built.
Janet Jamieson - Remember coming down the zigzag with no brakes in an ambulance they gave out about 50 metres from the top.
Phyllis Aberhart - Janet Jamieson, wow when was that? Hope it was manual so you could slow it down with your gears.
Janet Jamieson - Phyllis Aberhart, no it was the old big Chev, a very hairy ride down with a nurse sitting beside me knitting when we finally stopped she was still knitting and my knees were knocking.
Alan Harris - I drove that road a few times in during 1950 when the road was unsealed. Loose shingle corrugations and dust made the drive made the drive more difficult.
Marilyn Smith - My father drove a large Bedford truck over to Greymouth in the early 50's and had to back up a couple of times to get round the some of the corners on the zig zag. Mum couldn't look out the window as she was so afraid they would go over the edge. I have traveled that road a few times in the 50's and 60's beautiful road these days and scenery is wonderful. Thanks for the post.
John Paget - I remember going over it with my old man in an underpowered Comma van. The brakes played up when Jessie Guy - Incredible and scary, thank goodness for the viaduct.
Sandy Brears - we used to chug over that road in a wee Ford Prefect.

Carrie-Ann Gibson - Ann Clark, we always stopped at Otira lol was just an essential part of the trip.
Ann Clark - Carrie-Ann Gibson, had a ride up front of a steam train and put coal in the fire.

Dianne Blythe - Don’t know about the happily bit, I hated it.
Mark Thomas - Some vehicles had to reverse up onto the zigzag.

Malcolm Hills - Dawn Hills this was the old road.
John Morgan - Great old road. Never felt scared driving over as long as brakes worked. No sense of adventure now. Going too slow to worry. Only down hill traffic refusing to back up a danger.
