If only they would have had the foresight to preserve some of those great stands of forest for us. It didn’t need to be much... In Murchison you have that tiny portion at the camp ground by the Buller river. That’s what all the river flats and valleys looked

Theresa Gibson Pat Cooper there is a substantial area of an original stand of native in the Six-Mile on the Scott Farm, also an area on the old Woodcock Farm. All the white pine was cut and used for butter boxes etc. Trees were milled for housing, bridges, dredges you name it. Men made a living chopping bush, including Grandfather. Those spas in the background of this photo are probably the result of a fire burning out of control.

They didn’t need to do the hills of Murchison with the massive logging drives that Mum talked about. They didn’t even have the word firebreak back then lol.
If I had a time machine I’d go back and bash some sense into our bog Irish relations... probably would have come off second best mind you. Bet they could fight as good as they could cut trees down.
