Don Hutton: It was called "The Quad."

Linzi Woods: Lunch. Girls sat at south side of the quad boys on the north.

John Brown: Oh yes remember that well

Don Hutton" Who brought in that rule? We didn't have it in my time 1951 - 55. Mind you, I went home for lunch as we lived only a short distance away.

Linzi Woods: Don Hutton Not a rule... just how it was. (66-67) ....I was always overlooked ...probably because i was only 4' 5 at high school :)

Don Hutton: Did School Cert History with Harold Jefcoate (aka "HOJ") in the prefab by the flagpole. The regular lesson was to summarise chapters of textbooks like "The Rise of Nazi Germany" while he sat at his desk, read a book and chewed peppermints. Managed to pass though!

Jennifer Gaskell: I had Harold Jefcoate for School Cert Commercial Practice, He chewed Peppermints to stop the smell of Alcohol, if I'm rig

Don Hutton: Jennifer Gaskell It may have been a habit but he often went down to the Rec Hotel for a liquid lunch. One story is that a pupil cut up chalk and put it in the peppermint bag!

Jennifer Gaskell: I do remember that Don. How old would he have been when he taught at school? My Dad use to speak about him he may have gone to school with Dad here in Christchurch.on Hutton Jennifer Gaskell Harold was born in 1900. He went to school and university in Dunedin where he was a good scholar and sportsman, then taught at Christchurch Boys' High for about 20 years. He gave that up to be a publican on the Coast but it didn't work out so he went back to teaching at GTHS about 1949. He would have been 53 when he taught me in 1953. I think it was Fred Goodall who dubbed him as "HOJ" but a lot of friends and acquaintances called him "Jeff." Another nickname I think he had was "Hoppy."

Jennifer Gaskell: Thanks for that Don, He would have taught Dad at Christchurch Boys High, Dad was born in 1922. Thank you for the info.

Paul Soster: my old home,109 Shakespeare st,opposite school toilets,spent all our days on the Rec,pissed off bought up a catholic,had to bike to Marist every-day,rain,hail,or shine,instead of walking across the road.

Mary Moffitt We used to have assembly outside in the quadrangle. On hot days the girls had learned how to faint and it really scared the staff.
On rainy days it was held in two of the long verandahs with the headmaster standing on a chair in the angle. The rain came in on us. By the time of this photo the verandahs had been glassed in, but it was still not a very comfortable, for a time, standing at length surrounded by our school bags, until the hall was built. We loved having that hall.
