Maye Dunn: In saying that I found this rather blurry photo.

Glenn Johnston: The Hoki museum has a good photo of this hotel. In 1881 it got the name changed to Occidental Hotel after major renovations and enlargement. Prior to 1881 this Hotel was called the Swan Hotel. The origins of a hotel on the site go back to 1865.

Marilyn Paterson: My Grandparents had this hotel. I’ll find a photo of what it was like then.

Glenn Johnston: It was almost on Gibson Quay and had frontages to both Wharf and Revell Streets post rennovations. The Occidental flats, now gone, mentioned by Anthea would be on much the same footprint. When the Occidental lost its liquor license it was converted to flats. 1928 All Black Hack Frietas was once publican there according to Henry Pierson's book "The Crooked Mile".athy Bishopp wow, i owned this place from 1989 till about 1992

David Wood: Would that be this building by any chance? This is a portion only of a photo by John Tensfeld dating from about 1870. It's from a book he published entitled "A Trip Through New Zealand". The caption below the photo in the book reads "Hokitika, Westland (Gibson's Quay)"

Glenn Johnston: That is Gibson Quay. Cameron's Diggers Arms Hotel's name can be read. It is on the Tancred Street corner.

David Wood: Thanks Glenn. I was aware it was on the Quay and that it called Diggers Arms at the time the photo was taken - but didn't know which corner it was on. Thanks for clarifying:)

Helen Downs: was that the one that was by The Princess theatre also know The Red Lion was down that way also.
