Noeline McCaughan: By the time I saw this (1944) it was a wreck.

Neal Clementson: Could be my grandfather and great uncle.

Stephen Crackett: grandma used to go across the flume as a kid Debbie.

Colleen Byrne: Neal Clementson was that Andy Hunter I thought he started the flume etc.

Marc Crackett: It was one of the Price's that caught the flume on fire.

Debbie Crackett: Stephen Crackett yeah walked the flume to the island.

Neal Clementson: Colleen Byrne Could be they were a fairly big family.Jack my great grandfather had a mine at White Horse hill, I think he helped with the flume project.

Colleen Byrne: Was that John Hunter from Granity he was my first husbabds uncle and a great uncle to my children.

Trish Rennie: No harnesses n glow jackets then...there existed a " condition" called common sense. Amazing craftmanship.

Martin Ewing: So anymore info on this? Seems like quite the Was there a corresponding wharf on the island?

Maye Dunn: Yes Martin Ewing it was built by Andy Hunter who had a coalmine at Pahutane a couple of kilometres south where he built the coal flume running around the hillside. There was a wharf at the end of the island which can be seen in one of the photographs. The SS Hokitika came in to load coal and take it to Auckland. But the ship only did one trip the captain deemed it too dangerous. The flume fell into disrepair and was evenyually destroyed by fire sometime during WW2.

Mark Merriman: I bet this didn't last long. Imagine trying to get a boat in and out of there safely.

Flag McKenzie: You can see the large concrete pad where the loadout was it is still there and visible from the road.
