Date Created16th June 2019CommentsLyn Galvin Ye I went to St Joseph's from 53 to 61 before shifting to Dunedin. Just loved school there. Went from Mercy nuns to Presentation nuns who were straight out of Ireland and boy were they tough. Hated every minute of my last 9 months of primary school. We were constantly being told Irish girls wouldn't do that. So pleased to get to high school and back to the Mercy nuns.
Kerrie Jenkins-Henry Andy Devine was one of the children in the 1913 photo - opening year of St Joseph's. These were first pupils. The Devine home was right next door, so lots of balls used to come over the fence :) My Grandad about 1918 -My Grandad about 1918 - abt 1923 and My Mum and aunties went here from 1939. Mum said her mother used to bake sponges and blackberry pies and send them over to the sisters. Mrs Pollock did too. As kids we used to love visiting the little grotto in the school grounds.

Lyn Galvin Kerrie for about 6 months before we shifted to Dunedin we stayed at Grandmas. I used to stay in bed until about 15 minutes before school started then get up have a rush around then leap the back fence and be at school
Margaret E Sadler IS that Colleen Dunn (nee Connors?)
Kerrie Jenkins-Henry Yes, that's right Margaret. I think the lady on the right hand end is Janice Wallace.?
Kerrie Jenkins-Henry Haha Lyn! So good. Mum found it such a big shock when she had to go to High School. She was telling me about running for the train in the frost and ice in winter. Because the pipes were external, they used to freeze and they would often even have no water in the mornings. Couldn't light the fire becaause of something to do with the wetback.
Clare McDonnell Was that Sr Carmel (Ansley )who taught us in form 2 at St Pats Greymouth. If so I have been trying to find out for years where she is. I just loved her!!!
Kerrie Jenkins-Henry Must correct myself for the THIRD time! haha! Sister Carmel is the sister of Sister Bernadine! Not Sisters Aiden or Lagori. Lol! Mum sorted me out!
Kerrie Jenkins-Henry Past pupils of St Joseph's Runanga, Devine sisters, Jean, Shirley and Pat, about 1946?
Clare McDonnell cheers I'd really appreciate that!
Genevieve Bryant Clare McDonnell Our Form 2 teacher was Sister Bernadine.
Kerrie Jenkins-Henry Sorry Clare. Sister Carmel died either late last year or early this year. Mum said she'd been in Christchurch for years.
