Myron Caldwell USSCo. seem to have only K boats in the naming of the ships. I recall seeing them and the other ships waiting off Westport for the river to settle down so they could in, over the bar in the 50's.

Glenys Walton Our brother Ron was one of two crew members killed on the Kokiri in Wellington Harbour 13 March 1965.It was taking a load of coal from Greymouth. An explosion caused by gas occurred as they arrived in the harbour.Somethings live with you forever.

Dave Perry Glenys Walton Your right there. The Kaitawa used to travel between the Coast and Portland Cement works and went down with all hands on the Pandora Bank off Ninety Mile Beach in 1966. I remember that well for a number of reasons

Must have been close to the time she exploded and Cocky Walton was killed Moe. I had only met him a few months before in Westport he was a real good mate for a short time.Denise Bradley
Hard to believe now that vessels of this size were in the Harbour. That was enabled by the dredge. Does anyone know any more about that I remember the grinding & screeching sound well.
