Maye Dunn - Jim Galloway I wondered that but it was on the photo.
Alwyn Couper - Owen river is not in the Buller gorge - it is north of Murchison.

Phil Olson - Alwyn Couper Check your maps the Buller flows from Lake Rotoiti right past the Owen river tavern and is joined by the Owen river just downstream of the owen river bridge sh6.
Linda Skelton - All north of Murchison. not in the Buller gorge.
Rex Harley - Dont think Cobb and Co ever operated in NZ but some NZ operators were licenced to Cobb and Co.
Jim Galloway - I think you are right Rex Harley, Charles C Cole, one of Freeman Cobb's former coachmen in Australia set up in Otago in 1861, using Concord Coaches manufactured in Bathhurst, Australia under licence by Freeman Cobb. ( the Concord was built by Abbott & Downing an American Co)(source: "Let 'Em Go!" by IvanD Taylor).It appears the name Cobb & Co was painted on the original vehicles, and as it was such a successful name in Australia it was used in NZ although Freeman Cobb was not a share holder.
Phil Olson - Taken near junction of Buller river and Owen river near the present Owen river tavern.
Mary Kirkwood - They did and also through the Otira, I nursed a man in ChCh. who was a driver of one of their coaches in the 1960s.
Mary Kirkwood - He was in his 90s worked at the turn of the century.
Ruth Naylor -Quote " Cobb &Co was adopted by most firms coaching in the South Island never actually operated in New Zealand." Refer to "Friends in Chains Bob Henderson or High Noon for Coaches J. Halket Millar.
Ian Berryman - Ruth is correct, Newman Bros imported Cobb & Co coaches from Australia. My Great Grandfather was a driver for Newman Bros.
