Date Created28th June 2019CommentsDoris Blanchard I lived in Marsden Road Greymouth at number 3. The other end from that in the picture. I remember my father taking me along Marsden Road in the truck when he delivered groceries and I loved the ferns and foliage.

Bob Laing My Greatfather James Francis Laing built a new two story house at 38 Marsden Road for 100 pounds Stirling and shifted into it in 1900. The house was the third house in Marsden Rd and is now occupied by two units. The neighbour at 36 was a NRS Seddon. My grandfather James Edwin Laing told me Marsden Rd at that time was still largely bush covered. One dairy farm was also being developed.

Don Hutton My parents' new house at No 24 cost 700 pounds in 1928 - 29. Dad dug out big stumps after the land was cleared for subdivision. He also mentioned that nearby GTHS was built on land which had been heavily forested before 1923. I think I've asked you about your relations before Bob Laing?

Following WW2 he was an insurance assessor, the Secretary of a number of West Coast trade unions and a staunch Labour Party man who was for many years the electoral campaign committee chairmen for Labour elections

Don Hutton I knew John Laing whose daughter Heather was in my class in the 1940s. There was a son too whose name eludes me. They lived in Shakespeare St and later moved to Christchurch.

The son Grahame was a quantity surveyor in Dunedin. Unfortunately G died a number of years ago. Heather, when I stayed at John’s didn’t enjoy good health. I think she lived with John and I think H has also died. The youngest girl Alison lives in Halswell, ChCh.
